Herb Ellis is great as always, and this is a great recording. Maybe, too great. To explain what I mean, Stuff Smith’s electric violin and technique, can grate on one’s nerves. His note selection and phrasing are super, and I’m sure he dazzled the crowd at live gigs. Herb’s guitar playing is fluid and fun. This is probably a good add for diehard fans of either musician, but the grating tone of the fiddle makes it a tough listen for me. If it had been Ellis and Grappelli, I would’ve been in jazz heaven!
