Sashiko is a traditional form of Japanese embroidery that uses a basic running stitch to create repeating patterns. This form of sashiko called Kuguri-Sashi involves a second step of weaving a contrasting color of thread into the stitches to create a lovely textural design. The pattern may look complex, but it is actually quite straightforward to do.
The 100% cotton cloth comes pre-printed with the pattern, so you now exactly where to place your stitches. Once you are done stitching, follow the illustrations to do the weaving. The full instructions are in Japanese, but an English cheat-sheet is available for .
At just under 13 inches square (when folded in half), the cloth can be used as a dishcloth, finished as a pillow or tote, or combined with other panels as part of a larger project.
The package contains the fabric panel only. , , and a are recommended and sold separately. You will need 4 skeins of thread for the stitching (80m total), and 1 skein of contrasting thread for the weaving (20m total).
